What Is PCD Tools?

  • PCD refers to diamond particles which have been sintered together with a binder phase under high-presure,high- temperature conditions similar to those used in single crystal diamond synthesis. These sintered PCD materials have a variety of uses, most notably for cutting tools machining non-ferrous metals and for wear parts. An advantages of these materials is that their structure and composition can be engineered to have properties tailored to specific applications and operations.
  • As a cutting tool material PCD is generally recommended for the machining of non ferrous work-piece materials where high matrix composite, silicon aluminum alloys, ceramics, fiber glass, carbon fiber reinforced plastics, rubber, pre-sintered and sintered tungsten carbide.

PCD Cutting Tool Blanks

  • PCD cutting tool blanks are produced by sintering seleced diamond particles at ultra-high pressure and high temperature, and consist of a diamond layer on a tungsten carbide substrate.
  • PCD Blanks provide the hardness, abrasion resistance and thermal conductivity of natural diamond, combined with the toughness of tungsten carbide. Work pieces processed by PCD have good surface finish and may not need to be finish ground. It is an ideal tool material for its long life and high efficiency.
  • PCD is widely used for the machining non-ferrous metals and alloys, such as aluminum, copper, aluminum/gray iron composites, as well as nonmetallic materials such as wood, chipboard, ceramics, plastic, rubber etc, where high abrasion resistance and good surface finish are required.
  • PCD /CBN cutting blanks are welded into shank and made into diamond tools with many shapes.

What Is PCBN Tools?

  • PCBN is made by high pressure high temperature sintering of cubic boron nitride with a binder phase, and there are mainly tow groups of binders, namely metal binder and ceramic binder. CBN and diamond are very similar in crystal strurure, chemical bond and lattice parameters, thus they perform quite similar hardness and strength. In cutting applications, the wear resistance of PCBN exceeds 50 times that of tungsten carbide.
  • PCBN is typically recommended to machine ferrous materials such as hardened steel components over the ranges 45 to 70HRc and grey cast irons .The material combines high hot hardness, chemical and abrasion resistance to provide an effective solution for machining these very different work-piece materials.

PCBN Insert Formats

Solid Inserts

  • Inserts are made only from PCBN.
  • No material joint.
  • Best heat absorption capacity.
  • Can work at highest temperatures.

Full-Face Inserts

  • Inserts are made from a presintered carbide/PCD or PCBN joint.
  • Elimination of the brazing joint. Less delamination.
  • Better heat absorption capacity.
  • Can work at higher temperatures than tipped tools.
  • Facilitate larger depth of cut compared to the same size tipped insert.
  • The blanks are available with “A” and “W” ISO-style pin-lock holes.

Tipped Inserts

  • Requires a carrier and substrate for the insert.
  • The tips are brazed to the substrate. Various brazing methods are applied.
  • The substrate has to have a pocket that will accommodate and support the tip.
  • In these types of tools, the braze joint represents the weak link, so the brazing operation is very important and should be carefully controlled and executed.
  • The main advantage of tipped tools over full-faced inserts is the lower cost.
